THE HERD/LESS by Mamela Nyamza – ★★★☆☆

In Mamela Nyamza’s new work, the dancers make their own score, with steel cans strapped to their feet. It opens slowly, with a trance-like introduction built around the sound of a steam train, evocative of South African history.

The piece is entirely percussive, driven by the resonant clang of the cans and, just as powerfully, the dancers’ voices. Those voices are how the dancers communicate, the music, and they become a tool for both resistance and connection.

The costumes! Layered in clashing golds, hot pinks and electric blues that catch the light, they stand in stark contrast to the shepherd figure dressed in all white, who attempts to control the group with a stoic presence.

This was the UK premiere and the opening show of Dance Umbrella 2026. A dazzling and energetic start to the festival, which runs until 27 October.
