HANG TIME

Hang Time by Malik Nashad Sharpe

“It’s beautiful, high-energy and virtuosic, and there’s real joy in it. But that pleasure exists right alongside the more emotional and psychological dimensions of grief. ”

29 — 31 October, The Place

Hang Time is a choreographic meditation on hanging out and hanging on. Hanging in the air. Hanging in there. Hanging by a thread. Braids hanging from the nape of the neck. Bodies suspended in time. Lives hanging from one another.

Moving between soca and bouyon, séance, ritual and social gathering, choreographer Malik Nashad Sharpe – working under the alias Marikiscrycrycry – creates a charged world where dance, music and haunting collide.

Drawing on Black and Caribbean histories and lived experience, Hang Time explores grief, mental health and vulnerability within masculine communities. Cornrows and braids become symbols of protection and connection, while the performers carry one another, lose one another and push their bodies through states of exhaustion, collapse and endurance.

At its heart, Hang Time asks what holds a community together in moments of vulnerability and loss – and what remains when someone disappears.

Dark, intense and deeply physical, Hang Time brings Marikiscrycrycry's distinctive collision of contemporary dance, social dance, horror and fantasy to The Place for its UK premiere.
